ABOUT THE SPECTRUM BAND PROGRAM

Program Philosophy

The goal of the Spectrum Band Program is for students to develop a lasting appreciation for the value of music in their lives. Students are challenged to become the most proficient musician and performer that they are personally capable of. Through rehearsal and performance practices, we strive to develop a sense of self-confidence, self-discipline, motivation, and an inner drive for EXCELLENCE in EVERYTHING we do.

Through their social relationships within the band, students will develop lifelong memories and friendships that are bonded by the challenges they will face and overcome together. Above all, we hope students are able to view their time with the Spectrum Band as an experience that had a positive effect on their lives for years to come.

Band Classes

All students attend an in-timetable band class. The primary goal in these band classes is education in music through learning how to play a musical instrument. During these classes students develop skills and abilities through technical/musical studies, music theory, music history and performance technique, making them better/independent musicians.

Courses:
Band 9 - in Period 1 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and alternating Fridays.
(Backed with P.E. 9.)
Band 10 - in Period 1 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternating Fridays.
(Backed with P.E. 10.)
Band 11 & 12 - in Period 2 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternating Fridays.
(Backed with English 11 and 12.)

Band classes do not have public concerts, however, from these classes students take part in one of the two performing co-curricular Concert Bands - the Junior and Senior Concert Bands.

From here students have the opportunity to participate in the jazz bands, and other specialty performing groups.

All students perform in marching band.

Spectrum's Marching Band
The Spectrum Marching Band began in 2006 - a first at Spectrum School. We regularly receive invitations to parades in both Canada and the United States! The band typically performs during Christmas Parades in the winter and the Victoria Day Parade and community parades in the Spring. In 2011 and 2014, Spectrum had the honour of representing Victoria as we performed in the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup Festival Parades (Vancouver, BC). Musical selections include traditional marches and pop tunes (crowd pleasers!).  All students in all grades are expected to perform in the marching band activities.
