I hope you had a good weekend!
I had a wonderful time participating in professional development sessions at the BC Music Educators Association conference this weekend. The highlight of the weekend, however, was watching and listening to 4 of our Spectrum musicians performing in the various BC Honour Ensembles! Congratulations to Stephanie Butler (clarinet) and Jason Gordon (euphonium) who performed in the Honour Wind Ensemble , Cam Henderson (trombone) who performed in the Honour Jazz Band, and to Darian Woodland who sang in the Honour Concert Choir! The concert was excellent and they should be commended for their work preparing auditions, preparing high-level music, and for all of their work over the past week in rehearsals and performance. Bravo!
A big thank you to everyone involved in our Scrap Metal Recycling and Bottle Drive weekend back home! We raised $1300 at the bottle drive and will know the results of our scrap metal efforts soon. Thank you to Carol Davis and her team of parents who have scoured the city for donations, dropping off letters and canvassing businesses for donations. Furthermore, thank you to everyone who stayed so late on Saturday to finish up collections, sorting, and get that last bins loaded.
Thanks, also, to the grade 11 and 12 students that participated in the Glanford Band Camp on Sunday and Monday last week! Thank you for your leadership and musicianship and for helping to develop young musicians in our feeder schools. :)

*Sr. Concert Band flutes, piccolos, oboes, clarinets – there is a sectional on Monday at lunch to work on runs in Star Trek: First Contact.
4.) Uniform Pick-Up on Monday (6:00pm – 8:00pm in the band room) – Don't forget to pick up your uniforms! Only a few were picked up on the weekend.
5.) Back In Action Band Concert – Please read the running order for more information about our all-bands concert on November 5th at 7:00pm in the school gym. Students are required to be in attendance for concerts in which they are performing. Out of respect for your fellow musicians, students are required to attend the entire concert. This demonstrates a respect and value for the effort of others. Absence from school concerts is considered equivalent to missing a school examination.
6.) MusicFest Trip (Spring 2014)
Last April, the Spectrum Junior & Senior Concert Bands performed at the Regional Music Festival in Port Alberni, BC. Both bands received the highest ratings awarded of SUPERIOR +, qualifying both bands for an invitation to perform at the National Music Festival, May 2014. I am planning to attend the National Music Festival in Richmond, BC with both Concert Bands (this is THE highest calibre festival in Canada in terms of learning, performing, and the guest ensembles/performers/teachers that they bring in). This is an amazing opportunity for these students and the Band Parents Association is planning to financially assist with this opportunity by hopefully covering the costs of the festival fees of $75 per student performing + $38 per student in multiple bands (through fundraising). The cost per student is $225 for the overnight trip (this includes EVERYTHING: ferry, bus, MEALS, attractions/concert admission, hotel accommodation, etc.). All Spectrum Band tours are fully chaperoned, with the number of chaperones based on total tour participants. In order for the Concert Bands to attend MUSICFEST, we require the commitment of a minimum of 80 students.
For planning purposes, we will continue to have many fundraising opportunities for students to earn credits towards this band tour, including monthly bottle drives and Poinsettia Sales. Our October Scrap Metal Drive and ongoing Thrifty Foods Smile Cards fundraisers (both fundraisers allocated at 100% to the Band’s General Funds) will help offset festival fees and transportation costs.
Information is available on our Tours page. Any questions can be directed to our Band Manager, Carol Davis at 250-744-3312 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Poinsettia Sales have now started! Please read the Poinsettia Fundraiser Page on the band website for more information.
