Hi Everyone,
Congratulations to the cast, crew, and orchestra of Mary Poppins! The first two performances were sold out and everyone did an outstanding job! There are still some tickets left for the evening shows (7:30pm) on March 3rd and 5th as well as the sing-a-long (or… “hear-a-long” as someone called it last week!) on March 5th at 2:00pm. All other shows are sold out! Come check this show out if you can! You won’t be disappointed! :) Concert Bands are currently working on festival repertoire and jazz bands are preparing for gigs. The tour band rehearsals are going very well! We’ll have a great show for our tour to San Francisco in only a few short days. All students should now have Prestissimo March/Galop and Rock and Roll All Nite in their folders for marching band. Please start memorizing your parts as marching band practices will start up at the end of March! :) We have a gig coming up VERY quickly… April 6th – an opportunity to perform at a special assembly as the NFL will be honouring Spectrum with a Gold Football in recognition of Ed Murray's (Spectrum alumnus) contribution to football. I hope you had a wonderful weekend! (Wow - What a beautiful day today!) We have now settled in to Semester 2. Thanks to everyone for keeping a positive attitude through this long stretch to Spring Break! The various bands have begun sight-reading/working on new material for Spring Concerts. The Pit Orchestra is doing a stand up job preparing for the opening of Mary Poppins in a few short weeks. This is by far one of the hardest scores that we have ever played. Bravo to you all! I’m very proud of you for all that you have accomplished. :) Here’s what’s up this week. Please note that there are schedule changes for classes and rehearsals. 1.) Band Classes in Period 1 and 2: Tuesday – Band 9 in Period 1, Band 11/12 in Period 2. Wednesday – Band 10 in Period 1, BAND 11/12 IN PERIOD 2 (Sr. Jazz performing in Library, study block for non-jazz band students) Thursday – Band 9 in Period 1, "BAND ENGLISH" IN PERIOD 2 Friday – Band 9 in Period 1. Tour Band Rehearsal – Wednesday, Feb 10th at 7:30am Spring Break and the San Francisco tour are coming up quickly! This year’s tour concert band is a good mix of senior and junior students. There will be a rehearsal for all students (9s-12s) traveling on tour on Wednesday, February 10th. Additional rehearsals will be announced as we go. 4.) Sr. Jazz Band Performs for Elders Tea – Wednesday, Feb 10th at 10:30am Sr. Jazz Band will be performing for our First Nations Elders’ Tea on Wednesday morning. Please read the RUNNING ORDER for more information! This is a FULL UNIFORM performance! Don’t forget your uniform at home! :) 5.) Bottle Drive – Saturday, Feb 13th Our next bottle drive is this Saturday from 9:00am – 1:00pm in the school parking lot. We hope to see lots of students and parents out to this one. The Bottle Drives benefit individual student accounts (to pay for tour, music lessons, music supplies, etc.) but they also benefit the entire band program at Spectrum. Bottle Drive funds are used to buy sheet music, equipment, and instruments that are not covered by the school budget and benefit students in all of our classes and performing bands. Please consider coming out to help! The Bottle Drive will go ahead rain or shine, so please dress appropriately. We're still looking for 12-15 drivers, 8-10 parent sorters & lots of students for bottle canvassing, double credits are issued to student accounts for parent drivers. Students please sign up in the band room so we know how many of you are coming. Parents, please email Russ Forster (rforster@shaw.ca) if you are able to help. 6.) Report Cards – Band Classes/Concert Bands Clarification Report cards will be handed out on Friday in a mini-TAG. Band students will get a mark for their Period 1 or 2 band class (Band 9, 10, 11, or 12). They also receive a mark for their participation in “Morning Band” - the performing Junior and Senior Concert Bands (with Marching Band participation factored in as well). The names for the “Morning Band” rehearsals are… well… WEIRD. Why? I really have no idea... :) So, to clarify… If you see a course listed as “Brass Ensemble 9 – 12” - this is your mark for Jr. Concert Band and Marching Band. If you see a course listed as “Woodwind Ensemble 9 – 12” this is your mark for Sr. Concert Band and Marching Band. 7.) Pit Orchestra / Mary Poppins Our Senior Musical Theatre production of “Mary Poppins” runs Fri. Feb 26th, Sat. Feb 27th, Thu. Mar 3rd, Fri. Mar 4th, Sat. Mar 5th, and Sun. Mar 6th at 7:30pm. Tickets are available through the main office ($12 Adults, $10 Students). The remaining rehearsals, dress rehearsals and performances are mandatory. Please do not schedule appointments during any of the following dates or the before-mentioned performances. Thanks! Wed. Feb 10th 3:15pm-4:45pm Thu. Feb 11 – Sitzprobe from 3:15pm-6pm Sun. Feb 14th 6:30pm – 8:30pm Mon. Feb 15th 3:15pm-4:45pm Wed. Feb 17th 3:15pm-4:45pm Thu. Feb 18th 3:15pm-4:45pm Fri. Feb. 19th – Pro-D Day Rehearsal 9am-3pm (Lunch provided!)
