Hi Band Families!
Congratulations to Grade 12 student Andrew Montgomery who was a featured soloist with the Victoria Conservatory of Music Senior Orchestra. Andrew performed Paganini’s “Sonata for the Grand Viola” - a premiere performance of this work in Victoria, BC - as part of the VCM’s Spark to Flame concert. Andrew gave an absolutely brilliant performance of some of the most challenging viola repertoire I have ever heard! Bravo! Thank you to the grade 11 and 12 students that attended this concert and supported Andrew! “Evita” opens this week! The pit orchestra, cast, and crew have been working extremely hard preparing for opening night and it’s paying off! Tickets are selling quickly. Shows run March 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30pm. The final show is on March 12 - a 2:00pm matinee. Tickets are available by calling the school office (250) 479-8271. You don’t want to miss this one, folks! Thank you to all of the Grade 9s and 10s that participated in the the Band PE curling field trip last week. It was a lot of fun! Great work last week, folks!
January and February are tough months for kids (post winter break blues, new semester/classes/academics, gloomy weather, seasonal affectiveness "things" kicking in), and sometimes it seems like there is no "end" in sight (read: it's a long time to wait for spring break). Last week's rehearsals REALLY came together. So many things worked musically, technique-wise, and musicianship-wise. Keep up the amazing work, keep smiling, and keep being the lovely people that you are! I am very proud of you! THANK YOU to the KIWANIS CLUB OF VICTORIA! The Kiwanis Club made a very generous donation of $2000 to the band program for instrument purchases (cornets and flugelhorns for the concert bands and jazz bands). On behalf of my students and their parents, THANK YOU so much for this very kind financial support! Thank you to everyone (50 people! WOW!) that came out to our Bottle Drive on Saturday. Together, your raised $1112 for student accounts and the general band account. Thank you for your continued efforts in fundraising for the program. I am very happy to report that the Spectrum Band Parents Association has purchased a new marimba, a tenor saxophone, an oboe, low brass mouthpieces, sheet music, and 3 carts to stack the band chairs on. This would not be possible if it weren’t for the hard work of parents and students in doing fundraising (Bottle Drives, Jazz Night, Raffles, Silent Auctions, Poinsettias, Hanging Baskets, Apple Pies, DVDs, etc). Thank you so much! 1.) Band Classes in Period 1 and 2: ***Please note the changes marked in red.*** Monday - Band for Grade 9 & 10 BOYS / PE for Grade 9 & 10 Girls (with Ms. Condie) Tuesday – Band 11/12 in Period 2, PE for all Grade 9s & 10s in Period 1 (Boys, please dress for outside weather!). Pit Orchestra Rehearsal 9am-3pm *Mandatory rehearsal for all students traveling on tour to Oregon/Washington. Please attend with your instrument. 3.) IMPORTANT: Band 9/10 Curling on Wednesday Please meet in the New Gym at 8:25am on Wednesday for attendance. This field trip is a component of Band PE 9 and 10. Twenty students have not paid their $7 yet. Please do so on Monday. If there are financial issues, please let the PE teachers know (or let me know and I will pass this along). Several students have asked about not attending… this is NOT acceptable (unless there is a health concern, etc). To hear that my students are not participating is, quite frankly, disappointing. MY expectation is that you will participate FULLY in PE activities just as you are expected to participate fully in rehearsals, concerts, parades, etc. If this is still a concern after Monday, those students will speak to me. Band PE is a huge part of the team building for the Junior Band and our program has been supported by our PE teachers, Ms. Wilton and Ms. Condie for 11 consecutive years. Please respect their decision to take the classes out on this field trip. Besides, it’s going to be fun! Keep an open mind and try something new, folks. :) 4.) Pit Orchestra Rehearsal Schedule Please make note of our final rehearsals leading up to opening night! Monday, Feb. 20th - 3:15pm - 5:30pm SITZ-PROBE Wednesday, Feb. 22nd - 3:15pm - 6pm FULL SHOW RUN WITH CAST (Theatre) *Build pit in Period 3* Thursday, Feb. 23rd - 3:15pm - 5pm CLEANING Friday, Feb. 24th - 9am - 3pm PRO-D REHEARSAL (Lunch provided!) Course Selection for 2017/2018 - Band English Re: Band English 11 and 12 - On some course forms the band’s english class has been marked as “by application” or is completely missing from the form. This is incorrect. YES, there IS a Band English class next year. There is no application required. Please write “BAND ENGLISH 11 or 12” on your form. Circle it. Then highlight it. Then draw a picture of you, reciting Shakespeare, while holding your instrument. :) 6.) Glanford MS Cabaret Night The Jr. Jazz Band will be performing at Glanford Middle School’s Annual Cabaret and Patisserie night on Tuesday, March 14th. Your call time is 7:15pm at GMS in full uniform with instruments and music. We will watch and support the GMS jazz band’s performance, perform our charts, and play a mass band number at 8:00pm. Please let me know if you are able interested in volunteering to help GMS parents with set-up, tear-down, or anything else that is needed. Volunteer hours are available if you need them. Enjoy your week! Cheers, Jamie Davis ![]() Hi Everyone, I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. Let’s hope THIS weather sticks now!
