Thank you for another successful New Orleans Jazz Night! The bands played very well and the desserts were outstanding from what I've heard - thank you to Chef Humeniuk and the Culinary Arts Class! Thank you to all of my students for their hard work in making this night happen whether through playing in the bands/combo, serving, setting-up, or helping with tear-down. Also, I thought the change of venue to the New Gym worked quite well. Thank you to Ainslie Lowe and Breanna Lowe for all of their hard work organizing and to the Band Parents Association for making sure things ran smoothly. Finally, congratulations to all of our silent auction and raffle prize winners! Here's what we have on the go this week: 1.) Morning/Lunch/After School Rehearsals: Monday - Sr. Concert Band at 7:30am (Rehearsal Order: Sado, October, Northwoods, Folk Dances), Jr. Jazz Band at Lunch. Tuesday – Sr. Concert Band at 7:30am (Workshop with Dr. Gerald King), Jr. Jazz Band at Lunch. Wednesday – No Morning Rehearsal, Sr. Jazz Band at Lunch. Thursday – MARCHING BAND AT 7:30am, Sr. Jazz Band at Lunch. Friday – MARCHING BAND AT 7:30am, Drumline Section Practice at Lunch (Theatre). 3.) Concert/Jazz Workshops This Week Tuesday AM: Sr. Concert Band - Dr. Gerald King returns to Spectrum this week to work with our Sr. Band from 7:30am - 9:50am (Period 2) on Tuesday. Please be prepared to focus on Folk Dances, October, and Northwoods. Grade 9 and 10 students who are in the Sr. Band will be excused from Period 2 classes. Tuesday PM: Jazz Bands - The Capilano University Jazz Program will be visiting Spectrum on Tuesday afternoon as part of their tour through BC. "Cap" is recognized as one of Canada's top jazz training institutions (and it's in Vancouver!) offering a 2 year diploma and a 4 year degree in jazz studies. We will hear performances from their A Band (big band) and Nitecap (vocal jazz) and learn about post-secondary and career options for musicians. All jazz band students will be excused from their Period 3 class. Please meet in the theatre at 2:00pm. Non-jazz band students who wish to attend this workshop/performance - please see me ASAP on Monday. 4.) Bottle Drive on Saturday Our 6th Bottle Drive is this Saturday, April 30th from 9:00am - 1:00pm in the school parking lot with a BBQ lunch to follow. We already have 30 students signed up to participate but we can always use more. Double credits will be allocated to parents who volunteer to drive students on routes. Kelly from the Bottle Depot will be here at 9:00am for a special phot-op as the Band has won 1st Place in the Bottle Depot Recycling contest - a grand prize of $3894 for the program! Our bottle drives have raised over $10,000 in the last year. Wow! In addition to this we are also sitting at 2nd place in the 'Return It Schools' contest with a potential prize of $750. Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts! 5.) Senior Concert Band Performance - Thursday, May 5th in the Theatre Our Senior Concert Band will be performing a Spring Concert on Thursday, May 5th in the school theatre. The program will include some of the challenging repertoire that they have been preparing over the last few months. Admission is by donation at the door. Call time is 6:00pm for students and the concert starts at 7:00pm. We hope to see you there! 6.) Marching Band Important Dates Please note the following dates for Marching Band performances. Parades are considered mandatory performances unless students are excused by their parents ahead of time. Parents/Students - we are in need of hair braiders for each of the parades. Please let me know if you can help with this. Saturday, May 14 - BC Provincial Soccer Championships Call Time: 1:00pm at Westhills Stadium in Langford Start Time: 1:45pm / Finished by 2:00pm. Sunday, May 22 - Weekend Practice before Victoria Day Parade Call Time: 5:45pm at Tillicum Mall Upper Parking Lot (Old Navy / Safeway Side) Start Time: 6:00pm / Finished at 7:00pm Note: Uniforms NOT required. Monday, May 23 - Victoria Day Parade Call Time: 7:45am at Mayfair Mall Parking Lot Start Time: 9:00am / Finish time will depend on our placement in the parade (TBA). Students can be picked up behind the Empress Hotel. Saturday, June 4 - Oak Bay Tea Party Parade Call Time: 9:00am at Windsor Park (corner of Newport Ave. and Windsor Rd.) Thank you to the Jr. Concert Band for an excellent performance at Hampton Little League - the crowd was very receptive and happy to have us there. :) Thank you for being flexible with changes and for being so organized. Katherine Forster did a wonderful job warming up the band as we were setting up the field. Excellent leadership! A huge thank you to our percussion section and loading crew for being so organized and to all the parent drivers for their help on Sunday! :) Thank you to our senior jazz combo (Sine Cura) for the performance at the Elders' Tea on Wednesday this week! Raffle Ticket Sales: We still have a number of raffle tickets that need to be returned and a number of booklets that still need to be sold. All tickets and money MUST be in to the band room no later than Thursday AM. If you wish to still sell more booklets come and see me. It is expected that all students sell and return one book of tickets. Parents, please check your backpacks, band folders and instrument cases. Thanks! SAANICH RAFFLE TICKET BLITZ: Thursday evening 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Meet at the school at 5:00pm. We will go door-to-door (bottle drive style) in the school neighbourhood to try to sell off any remaining tickets. Please email me if you are interested in volunteering to help with this. We had a busy week last week with football assemblies, the juniors' Spring Concert, and Layritz Little League opening and again, band students played well, were organized/prepared, and represented Spectrum with pride! Thank you, everyone. I am very proud of all of you! Thank you to all of the parents that helped out to make these performances successful (donating vehicles, helping to transport gear/kids, coming to watch and support, helping with set-up/tear-down). Your support is always appreciated and we couldn't do these events without you! A big thank you to René Schwarz for always supporting our performances – not only as a band parent, but as the school’s BRILLIANT media arts teacher! René regularly films our performances and creates DVDs for us. The feedback that our students receive from hearing/seeing themselves in performance is invaluable – THANK YOU! Hampton Little League Opening Ceremonies - Jr. Concert Band - Sunday The Junior Concert Band will be performing for the Hampton Little League opening ceremonies on Sunday, April 17th. Call time for Jr. Band is 11:00am at the park concession. Please arrive wearing your full uniform with instrument and music. We are again in need of trucks/vans/comically-large-horse-drawn-carts to transport chairs, stands, and instruments to the park. Please advise by email if you can help! We will meet at the school at 10:30am to load gear. Please read the attached running order for more details. 4.) New Orleans Night Notes / Raffle Ticket Sales a. A number of non-jazz band students have NOT signed up for shifts yet. Please take care of this by the end of the day on Monday. b. Thank you to everyone that has been selling raffle tickets! Again, we ask that every student sell at least ONE book of tickets. All sold tickets/money and any unsold booklets are due back by FRIDAY, April 15th at 2:00pm. c. We are looking for volunteers to sell raffle tickets at the Uptown Walmart on Saturday, April 16th in one-hour shifts from 10:00am – 3pm. (Students will be required to wear your marching band uniform). Parent supervisors will be needed as well. Please advise by email if you are interested in a shift. A sign-up sheet is available in the band room. d. Parents who are interested in assisting, please contact Ainsley Lowe (akalowe@shaw.ca) e. We are not pre-selling tickets to this event so admission is $10 at the door. f. Thank you to grade 12 student Breanna Lowe for designing this year's poster. Wednesday, April 6th - ALL BAND STUDENTS - Golden Football Assemblies I have decided to involve ALL our Grade 9 through 12 band students in this massive school event. We will perform "Prestissimo" and "Rock and Roll all Nite" seated in the gym during 2 daytime assemblies. All students must bring their MARCHING BAND UNIFORM to school on Wednesday morning. Bring a change of clothes to change into after the first performance! Timeline: 7:30am - 8:25am - Senior Concert Band Rehearsal 8:30am - 8:45am - Senior students change into uniforms if needed. Junior students meet in the band room in uniform. 8:50am - Set-up and brief rehearsal in Old Gym 9:15am to 9:45am - Student Assembly #1 9:50am - Change and return to Period 2 classes. 2:00pm - Call time for all students. Change into uniforms. 2:15pm - Move to Old Gym. 2:30pm to 3:00pm - Student Assembly #2 3:00pm - All students help with tear down, change, and go home! 5.) Thursday, April 7th - Jr. Concert Band and Jr. Jazz Band SPRING CONCERT The Junior Band and Junior Jazz Band are performing on Thursday night with special guests from Colquitz and Glanford Middle Schools. Student call time is 6:00pm in full uniform. Concert starts at 7:00pm. Come and see your talented kids perform in our annual family of school's concert in the Old Gymnasium COMPLETE WITH NEW BLEACHERS! Admission is FREE. Please read the running order for more information. 6.) Saturday, April 9th - Senior Concert Band performs at Little League Opening Ceremonies Sr. Concert Band will perform for the LAYRITZ Little League opening ceremonies on Saturday, April 9th. A loading crew and parent drivers will be needed at the school at 10:00am. Student call time at Layritz Park is 11:00am. Students will be dismissed at 1:00pm. A running order will be distributed during Wednesday's morning rehearsal. If you are a parent with a truck or van - we will need help moving equipment, chairs, and stands to/from these events. Please let me know if you can assist with this! 7.) New Orleans Jazz Night Fundraiser – Friday, April 22 Sign up sheets for non-jazz band members to select shifts for this event will go up on the Band Room door at 3:00pm tomorrow. First-come/first-served for shift selection. :) Shift choices are:
***Raffle Tickets – All students were given a book of 10 raffle tickets to sell ($2 each). EVERY STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO SELL AT LEAST ONE BOOKLET THIS YEAR. Enter to win some wonderful prize packages! All profits from raffle sales will go towards purchasing instruments, sheet music, and much-needed equipment. Please ask your student to bring these home and encourage them to sell their tickets. Every little bit helps! For every book of tickets that is sold and returned, students will be entered to win one of our student prizes (music lessons, gift cards, tech, lots of good stuff!). Have a look at the Raffle Prize Information sheet for more information about what is included in the grand prizes. ***Raffle Ticket Sales at Walmart/Uptown – We will be out in the community selling raffle tickets to shoppers at Walmart/Uptown on Saturday, April 16th. We are looking for students and parents to sell in short one hour shifts. More information and sign-up information coming soon. 8.)
