The bottle drive went really well yesterday. Together, you raised $1554 for student accounts and the band general account! Thank you! Thank you for another strong week last week. :) The marching band is starting to sound quite good! Thank you for your dedication to practicing and attending rehearsals. The jazz bands and concert bands are ready for a big week with concerts and the jazz festival. Parents, we hope you attend the concerts on Tuesday and Thursday. Your kids have been doing some outstanding work in rehearsals over the past few weeks. I am very proud of them! :) 1.) Performances This Week: Monday, May 1st - Music Monday! The Senior Concert Band will perform at Marigold Elementary School on Monday AM after our morning rehearsal. Uniforms are not required but if you can wear something red/Canadian that would be great! You are excused from Period 1. Running Order: 8:30am - Set-up at Marigold, re-tune. 9:00am - O’ Canada (played twice for for English and French lyrics) 9:25am - Senior Band Performance (Fate of The Gods followed by the Marching Band “routine”) 9:40am - Perform “This is My Home” with Marigold students. Once done, return to Spectrum for Period 2. Tuesday, May 2nd - Junior Bands’ Spring Concert with Glanford and Colquitz The Jr. Jazz Band and Jr. Concert Band perform at 7:00pm in the school’s Old Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Student call time is 6:00pm in full uniform. Please read this "running order" for more information. Admission = FREE! We are still in need of 9 more stage crew volunteers as this is a large concert with many performers. Wednesday, May 3rd - West Coast Jazz Festival Trip The Jr. and Sr. Jazz Bands travel to Nanaimo on Wednesday to perform in the West Coast Jazz Festival. Thank you to everyone that turned in forms/money last week. Student call time is 7:00am at the school. Please read this "running order" for more information. We will return to Spectrum for 7:30pm. Dinner is included but PLEASE pack a lunch/snacks for the bus. Thank you for an awesome “A Touch if New Orleans” Jazz and Dessert Night on Friday evening! The jazz bands and combos played well and the evening really came together nicely with the desserts and all of the service shifts that kids worked. Thank you so much to Nancy Wong and Alison Hoogland for their hard work behind the scenes organizing prizes, raffle tickets, auction items, and presenting the evening! We couldn’t have done it without you and all of the parents that helped out behind the scenes on Friday (Bonnie, Jacquie, Chuck, Victoria, Liz, Russ, and many more!). Andrew won an “Adjudicators' Discretionary Award for Outstanding (Oboe) Performance” at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival last week! Jazz Bands To West Coast Jazz Festival Next Week The Jr. and Sr. Jazz Bands will be traveling to Nanaimo on Wednesday, May 3rd to participate in the West Coast Jazz Festival (the bands will perform, participate in clinics, catch the VIU Big Band Concert and the Adjudicators’ Combo performance, in addition to hearing school jazz bands, and a group dinner). Students will miss all 4 classes. It is expected that all band members participate and travel will be by school bus/coach. The cost of the trip is $30 per student and will include all travel, music “stuff", and a group dinner. Cheques can be made out to the “Spectrum Band Parents Association." Please send me a quick note if you have a financial concern (confidentiality assured). Call/Departure time TBA. A running order will be available later this week. Please fill out THESE THREE permission forms and return them by this Friday with $30. Yes. They are completely redundant...and repeat a lot of the information BUT they are legally required by the school district (my bosses). :o) As everyone on THIS trip has traveled to Oregon or Port Alberni you do NOT need to fill out the lengthy medical forms again (YUSS!!). Please advise if any medical information has changed since those trips, though. 4.) Upcoming Performances Monday, May 1st - Music Monday Performance - The Sr. Concert Band will perform with Marigold Elementary School on Monday, May 1st as part of the national Music Monday celebration. This will be during period 1. 8:30am Set-up at Marigold after our morning rehearsal, 9am Start. Uniforms will not be required. Tuesday, May 2nd - Spring Junior Band Concert at 7:00pm in the Old Gym - The Junior Concert Band and Jr. Jazz Band will perform a joint concert with the bands from Glanford and Colquitz Middle Schools. Call time is 6:00pm in Full Uniform. The concert will run from 7pm - 9pm at the latest. Student volunteers for “stage crew” are needed - please sign up in the band room. Admission is FREE. I hope you all had a restful and relaxing long weekend! Happy (belated) Easter! Congratulations to our Jr. and Sr. Concert Bands for their performances at the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival! The Jr. Band earned a ranking of “Superior Minus” (the majority of marks in “Superior” and a few in “Excellent”) and the Sr. Concert Band earned a ranking of Superior! I am incredibly proud of everyone for their hard work and diligence preparing for the festival. The repertoire sounded great and we came home with some new approaches and ideas for rehearsals. Bravo, everyone! A big thank you to our chaperones: Jacquie, Alison, Russ, Liz, and Barb for making this festival trip possible and for providing a high standard of care for all students! Re: Last weekend’s Raffle Ticket Blitz: Thank you to everyone that helped sell raffle tickets and supervise at Tillicum Mall on Saturday. Thank you to Cheryl Bowes for organizing the blitz with mall administration and to Nancy Wong for organizing all the tickets the came in! You ended up selling 780 tickets and got $67.20 in donations, with a number of people inquiring about New Orleans Night. Megan Parker sold 11 books by herself! 4.) Band Bottle Drive #6 - Saturday, April 29th. Our next Bottle Drive is on April 29th from 9am - 1pm in the school parking lot. Thank you to everyone who participate in The Rink Cycle today! Your playing was only outdone by your patience and helpfulness throughout the rehearsal and set-up/tear-down. Opportunities like this only come along once in a while so I’m glad we were able to participate in this celebration of our Canadian musical heritage. Thank you to our chaperones: Victoria, Russ, and Liz and a big thank you to Meghan, Ryan, Tracey, Caitlyn, and Ryan for their help in getting all of our gear to and from the arena. We now set our sights on the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival on Tuesday! Both concert bands are performing very well and we are in good shape for our festival performances on Tuesday. I hope you all enjoyed your Spring Break! We had a wonderful tour to the Oregon Coast! Thank you to my students for all of their hard work, flexibility, and musicianship on tour. I think we learned a lot and played really well. A big thank you to all of our chaperones for taking time out of their busy lives to chaperone this tour. The standard of care on the tour was very high thanks to Jacquie Hawey, Victoria Stewart, and Gary Wong. It’s my intention to have Grades 9 to 12 perform in the Victoria Symphony’s “Rink Cycle” Concert on Sunday. We’ll discuss details and rehearse the music in class this week. It’s going to be a lot of fun! Please see the timeline listed below and, if you are unable to participate please let me know ASAP. The Victoria Symphony is very excited to present Rink Cycle II: Victoria Symphony Celebrates Canada 150 with Victoria Youth at 2:30 PM on April 9th , 2017 at Save on Foods Memorial Centre. Designed to be the largest participatory gathering of children in Victoria’s history, Rink Cycle II will bring up to 2,000 Greater Victoria school children together with the Victoria Symphony to create music, song and dance. We will explore Canadian heritage including First Nations culture, songs from across Canada, and celebrations from national events such as the 2010 Olympics and 1987 Expo. Students leave instruments, music, and stands. Get lunches. Break in bleachers. 2:00-2:30 Regroup - Students and VS setup for performance 2:30 Rink Cycle begins 3:30 Rink Cycle ends. 4:00 Please meet your child and exit the arena at Gate 3 after the concert. 6.) Port Alberni Festival Trip / Jr. Band Spring Concert - April 11th On Tuesday, April 11th, all concert band students will be traveling by bus to Port Alberni to participate in the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival. This is a day trip and travel will be by bus. The cost of the trip is $30 dollars and includes pizza dinner on the way back home. Please make any cheques payable to “Spectrum Band Parents Association." Please let me know if you have a confidential financial concern. Travel forms will be handed out in class this week. This was originally listed on April 12th but the Festival assigned us the April 11th slots. Apologies for the date change! Due to the festival date change we will postpone next week’s Junior Band/Junior Jazz Band Concert that was originally scheduled for the same date. I have tentatively set a date of May 2nd for the Jr. Bands' spring concert (7pm in the Old Gym). More details to follow. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. |
