Considering how many groups were out also canvassing the neighbourhood, this is awesome! Congratulations to the “Sine Cura” jazz combo (Cam Henderson, Ethan Sawyer, Hunter Ellis, and Rowan Wolfe) for their performance at Millstream Mall’s “A Taste of Millstream!” Great work guys – lots of impressed people! Jason Gordon did an outstanding job at the Sidney Concert Band performance this afternoon at the Mary Winspear Centre! I hope you enjoyed your sunny weekend! Again – Congratulations Marching Band! A job well done yesterday in front of tens of thousands of people! :D :D Thank you to the Sr. Jazz Band for performing at the Grade 8 orientation day last Thursday as well! "Uptown Funk" was funktastic!! RE: THE TIMES COLONIST PARADE ARTICLE. I’m sure, if you are a Time Colonist subscriber, you will have noticed that, AGAIN, the Spectrum Community School Marching Band had no photos in the print or online version of the parade coverage today. In the last 7 years, Spectrum has won 1st-Place in the Canadian Marching Band category 4 times with few or NO pictures of our ensemble each year (a picture and a small write-up that I submitted regarding the Nationals was published last year). While I am very appreciative and encouraging of all the talented local school bands in the parades I find it disappointing that, yet again, our hardworking Spectrum musicians did not receive the recognition they earned and deserved. If you were as frustrated as I was when I opened the paper this morning, please consider emailing your concerns to the editor of the Times Colonist at editor@timescolonist.com and CC your email to letters@timescolonist.com. Thanks to Lucie Jackson’s Tweets and emails to the TC they have added a photo to the online parade article which can be found at: http://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/thousands-line-douglas-street-for-victoria-day-parade-1.1938765 Anyways… on to happier things… :) Band This Week: 1.) Band Classes: Wednesday – Band 10 in Period 1. Thursday – Band 9 in Period 1, Band 11/12 in Period 2. Friday – Band 9 in Period 1. **Practice Cards for Band 9/10: Turn in Week 30. Now on Week 31! 2.) Morning/Lunch/After School Rehearsals: Wednesday – Sr. Concert Band is CANCELLED, Sr. Jazz at Lunch, None Thursday – Jr. Jazz at 7:30am, Sr. Jazz at Lunch Friday – Jr. Concert Band at 7:30am, None, None. 3.) Year End Concert! Tuesday, June 2nd, 7:00pm at the Victoria Conservatory of Music Our Year End Concert is fast approaching! Remember that the date has CHANGED and the concert will be held on Tuesday, June 2nd at 7:00pm in the Alix Goolden Hall at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. All bands will be performing and the admission is by donation (to cover the cost of the hall rental). Please spread the word about this performance! We are in need of 3-4 trucks to help transport percussion instruments, music stands, and other equipment to the hall on June 2nd (meet at Spectrum at 3:00pm to load). If you are able to help with transporting gear back and forth please let me know ASAP. Thanks! 4.) Bottle Drive on Saturday Our monthly bottle drive is scheduled for this Saturday from 9am-1pm in the school parking lot! Come out and help raise funds for the band program and individual student accounts. It’s going to be a beautiful day! The Band Parents association will provide a BBQ hotdog lunch, refreshments and snacks. ***We are still in need of parent drivers AND a parent with a truck to pick up supplies and the pallets from the Bottle Depot. Please let me know if you can help out! Thank everyone! Have a great week and keep smiling! All the best, J. Davis (The Proudest Band Teacher… I think “proudest” is a word…) Hi Everyone,
1.) Year End Concert Date Change Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had to CHANGE the date of our year end band concert. Please note that our year end band concert will now take place on Tuesday, June 2nd at 7:00pm at the Alix Goolden Hall at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (instead of June 9th as originally scheduled). I hope that this will still be accessible for band families, especially those families that have guest traveling from out-of-town to watch this concert. Sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. Students – please let your employers know ASAP! 2.) 2016 Band Tour – San Francisco, California We have started planning our next Band Tour for Spring Break 2016. With the success of the Germany tour this past Spring we are now looking at an exciting 7-day bus tour down to San Francisco. There will be a good mix of educational, musical, and fun events for everyone to do! The cost of the tour is $1550 (including ALL meals, accommodations, attractions/events, and transportation). We are asking for families to commit to tour ASAP due to the fluctuating US/CA dollar. Our tour company, Educational World Tours, will purchase US dollars on our behalf so that we can secure and maintain the cost of the tour (in case the dollar fluctuates, so we aren’t put in a situation where we have to ask for more money). Please have a look at the San Fran Tour Page. Please return the “Intent To Travel Form” and the required deposit ($250) by May 29th to secure your seat on the tour! 3.) French-Braiders Needed for Victoria Day Parade We are in desperate need of hair braiders for the Victoria Day Parade next Monday. If you can help out please email Carol Davis (spectrumbandparents@hotmail.ca) and let her know. Don’t forget that we have a WEEKEND PRACTICE at Tillicum Mall on Sunday from 6pm-7pm. Parade Day is Monday, May 18th. Students meet at Mayfair Mall at 7:45am in full uniform in Section C-47 (between The Bay and Blanshard Street). Thanks, all. Cheers, Jamie Hi Everyone,
Band students soared through another BUSY week at Spectrum! - Congratulations to the Jr. Concert Band for their performance at our joint MusicMonday performance with Marigold Elementary! The audience was really delighted by the band’s performance and we have received several letters from Marigold students and staff expressing appreciation for the band’s performance. :) - Spectrum hosted a Grade 6 Band Festival on Thursday. The middle school bands that attended played very well! Additionally, we had a number of OUR band students volunteering as festival assistants, band escorts, and stage crew. Thank you to everyone that helped make the festival a success! - The Sr. Concert Band performed on Thursday night in the Theatre and did an excellent job on a challenging program of Grade 4-5 pieces! Bravo, everyone! Thanks for your hard work in preparing for this concert. :) - We have received word that Tutzing Highschool in Germany (which we performed at while on tour) was so impressed by the Tour Band’s performance that they are dedicating two pages of their yearbook to Spectrum’s performance and visit! Wow! Never underestimate the impact that music and teamwork have on people. ;-) - Thank you and congratulations to Ms. Cable on the completion of her student teaching practicum!
