![]() Hi everyone! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!! WOW!!! What a week! First and Foremost, BRAVO to all of my students who performed in the scorching heat this weekend in Esquimalt. It was hooooootttttt but you all played very well and band sounded GREAT! Colour Guard was FANTASTIC! I am most proud of your encouragement and enthusiasm towards other groups. Parents from Colquitz, Cedar Hill and Esquimalt High all approached me at times during the parade and thanked me for your cheering and support. SOOOO PROUD! Thank you to those of you who braved the cold wind whipping up from Cloverpoint. You adapted, you played well and we supported a great cause. The CEO of the Breast Cancer Agency wishes to thank all of your for coming out and supporting the Inaugural walk. Parents: Thank you thank you thank you! Thank you for supporting your children's pursuit of a music education and thank you for dropping them off, picking them up and helping where needed. The Hair Braiding went without a hitch and I am so grateful! 1) Victoria Day Parade- Monday, May 20th Victoria Day Parade a.k.a May Day Parade is set to take place Monday, May 20th and I couldn't be more excited to be walking beside you again down Douglas street. Over 40,000 people will be lining the streets and supporting the music we share As a result, our final rehearsals are paramount to continuing the successes we have had in recent years. Sound. Appearance. Precision will be on full display. Please arrive on time to our last two rehearsals, everyone is important and everyone is needed. Missing a person means missing a part of the music. Have fun, work hard, play with heart and we will be in good stead! Our Parade Number with Running Order will be released when we have heard from the Festival Coordinators. Expect to muster in our area @ 7:30am SHARP. Having been awarded 1st Place last year, we will be near the front of the parade and starting on Douglas Street 2) Capital City Jazz Festival I am happy to report the Capital City Jazz Festival is BACK, Alive and Well. The Spectrum Junior Jazz Members will be performing in a non-competitive, collaborative Jazz festival at Colquitz Middle School. We will leave as a group from Spectrum at 8:30am SHARP following our Jazz Rehearsal and walk to Colquitz. Students will be back and expected to return to their Block A Classes (Band or PE). Please arrive to rehearsal in Jazz Blue Uniform. You can bring a change of clothes with you for the remaining blocks of the day. 3) Family of Schools Concert We are excited to host the Family of Schools concert in the Spectrum Theatre this year. Ms. Montgomery of Colquitz will bring along with her Grade 8 Concert Band and Jazz Band. Spectrum will perform alongside with Junior Concert Band and Junior Jazz Band. All members will have the opportunity to sit in the theatre and cheer each other on. Looking forward to a nice evening of music and supporting our family neighbourhood school! Here is our week! 1.) We have another exciting week in Spectrum Band! Two Parades, a music festival and the continuation of a brand new ensemble at Spectrum Community School: Choir!!! No experience needed, if you belt out a tune or tune (in your head or out loud) I encourage you to give this ensemble a try! Here is our week! 1) Buccaneers Day Parade & Mothers Day Breast Cancer Walk Its our First parade of the spring season!!! I am looking forward to heading over to my old stomping grounds and sharing our music with the fantastic community of Esquimalt. I have enclosed the Running Order for Buccaneers Day Parade this Saturday and Breast Cancer walk on Sunday. Please take some time to read through the instructions i.e. no cases, go to the bathroom, have fun, wear sunscreen etc. CALLING ALL HAIR BRAIDING SPECIALISTS: It is part of our tradition that members of the band with long hair, have their hair braided in to 2 French Braids. Last year, we had an EPIC* turn out of moms and grandmothers and aunts and friends to help with hair braiding PRE-Parade. I would LOVE and be forever GRATEFUL if we can keep the same team together for our parades. If you are willing and able, we are always in need of volunteers. Bring your hairdresser, your neighbour, your. As I mentioned last year, my wife tried to teach me and well, lets just say I should stick to what I know best: Band, Bruins, Volkswagens... Hot Coffee and Tea is provided at the behest of a VERY appreciative band director. *The most amazing group of ladies helping with hair braiding. 2) Marching Band Rehearsals Parade season is literally THIS WEEK! As such, our rehearsal times have shifted to accommodate rehearsal times needed to get us in to fine form. Please be aware that 100% Attendance is needed for 100% FUN along with 100% Sound. Appearance. Precision. I am SO EXCITED for this years parades. 3) Grade 6 Band Festival We are excited to host the 5th annual Spectrum Grade 6 Band Festival in our Theatre. We have grade 6 bands from CMS, GMS, St. Joseph’s, Dunsmuir, Rockheights, and Shoreline. I am in need of 10 grade 10-12 volunteers to assist as band guides, warm-up room monitors, storage room monitors, adjudicators assistants, and stage crew. Please sign up in the band room. Period 1 and 2 classes will watch the festival as the band room will be used as a warm-up room. Here is our week! 1.) Its almost May?!? Congratulations to all members of the Jazz Bands at Spectrum! Our "A Touch of New Orleans Night" was a fabulous evening of music, laughs, deserts and silent auction items! Bands were strong, crowd great and overall, a wonderful night. Thank you again to Cheryl Bowes, Christine Surridge, Bonnie McCallum for spearheading the event. Thank you to Tracey Gudgeon, Michelle Schmit, Christine Sternig and Nancy Wong for taking care of the in-house organization before and during the show. We owe our successes to all of you who were involved! If you Have photos of the event, please send them our way :) We are off to Nanaimo this week to attend and participate in the West Coast Jazz Festival. If you are a parent wishing to take in the festival, enjoy lots of music, you are more then welcome to join us. Three groups (Jr. Jazz, Sr. Jazz & Sr. Combo) will be representing our school this week at the West Coast Jazz Festival up at Vancouver Island University. A bus has been arranged to pick us up at 7:00am sharp! This will be a fun day of performance, concerts and clinics. A full schedule has been released along with a permission form for our excursion.
