Hi Everyone,

It was great to see everyone at the information meeting on Monday as well as the uniform sizing nights and Spectrum’s Meet the Teacher night. Thank you for coming!

Thank you to our uniform team (headed by Robyn Copp) and all of the volunteers who came out to assist last week with sizing. To my students - thanks for your patience throughout the nights!

The Senior Jazz Band performed on Friday afternoon for the school during the Cops4Cancer kick-off assembly. Well done, folks! Pretty impressive after only 3 rehearsals! Musically, all groups and classes have had a good start and have been doing some great work. Keep it up! :)

Our annual Morning With a Pro on Saturday was another success thanks to all of the Spectrum student volunteers, alumni helpers and clinicians, our university and community volunteers, and band manager, Jacquie Hawey! Sixty six Glanford and Colquitz grade six students got a head start on their band instrument this weekend. Bravo, all!

Here’s what’s on the go this week...

3.) Apple Pie Week Info

It’s here - our 11th annual Great Apple Pie Event! Here’s what you need to know…

We will be assembling pies on Saturday, October 1st in the Spectrum cafeteria starting at 9:00am.  Thank you to the Spectrum Band Parents association for providing a hot dog lunch on Saturday!

WE NEED YOUR HELP ON SATURDAY! : This is a huge undertaking and it needs LOTS student and parent support. I ask that ALL students participate by signing up for AT LEAST one shift on Saturday.  If you want to make even more money for your personal band account: stay longer, take more shifts, and bring your friends/parents to earn EXTRA FUNDRAISING CREDIT.

Shifts: 9am-12pm, 10am-1pm, 11am-2pm, 12pm-3pm, 2pm-5pm. Please sign up on the door in the band room.

Equipment/Peelers/Knives/Cutting Boards: Please bring your own apple peelers, knives, bowls, and cutting boards (make sure they are labeled please!). We will not be using the culinary arts kitchen this year, so please bring your own equipment. The SBPA has a limited number of peelers, boards, and bowls.

Apple Picking: We have a number of trees in the community that need to be picked. I need volunteers to do this during Period 3 and 4 as well as after school Tuesday - Thursday. Students will receive additional fundraising credit if they volunteer to assist with this. Please let me know if you are available.

Apple Donations: Apples can be brought to the band room at any time this week. We take ANY kind of apple - we’re not picky!

Pie Deliveries: You MUST arrange to pick up and deliver all of your apple pie orders on Saturday (starting anytime after 12pm). There will be absolutely NO OVERNIGHT STORAGE at Spectrum this year. Thank you for your attention to this very important detail.

Thank you for supporting this fundraiser and band program tradition!

4) Level Ground Coffee

Reminder: The next Level Ground Coffee order is due on October 15th. Order forms are available in the band room.

Have a great week! I hope to see all of you on Saturday!
Cheers,

Jamie Davis

5.) Morning With A Pro - Saturday, September 24 - Help Needed!

This Saturday is our annual “Morning With A Pro” that we host for Glanford and Colquitz Grade 6 students. I am in need of 10-12 student volunteers to assist with wrangling grade 6s, registration, and snack delivery. The time commitment is 8:00am - 1:00pm with a pizza lunch included. Please let me know if you are interested. Yes, this does count toward volunteer hours for graduation.

6.) Oregon Band Tour

We are still accepting “Intent To Travel” forms and deposits for the spring band tour to Oregon. Get them in soon as the bus is filling up already!

Cheques can be made payable to "Spectrum Band Parents Association.” There have been some questions as to whether a credit card payment can be made online. At this time, we are unable to do this but will look into this option for future travel opportunities. Sorry for any inconvenience!

7.) The Great Apple Pie Event

Apple pie sales have started and all students have now received a sales form. Extras are available in the band room. Please return all forms and money in a sealed envelope by 2:00pm on Friday, September 23rd.

Students - please make sure you arrange to deliver all of your pie orders as there is no storage available at the school this year.

Please note that there was an error on the order form: Apple Pie Making Day is Saturday, October 1st and Final Pickup is Sunday, October 2nd. My apologies for the error!

Apple Donations - we are in need of donations of apples. Please let me know if you have apples you can donate to the event.

We are in need of lots of help to make this fundraiser work. Please sign up in the band room if you can help make pies on Saturday, October 1st.

Good evening!

My name is Jamie Davis and I am your son or daughter’s band teacher at Spectrum Community School. Welcome to our new band students and welcome back to our returning students - I am very excited to work with all of you this year! If you are new to the Spectrum Band Program, I send an email update every Sunday night to keep everyone apprised of what’s going on this week. It’s a busy program and this helps to keep everyone on the same page. From time to time, you may receive emails from our Spectrum Band Parents Executive. We had a great first week with classes doing some musical and non-musical goal setting for the year. Numbers are up in all of our classes and performing bands! Things are already shaping up for another positive, successful, and fun year!

Here’s what we have on the go this week:

- I am available for extra help after school.
- Pit Orchestra Rehearsals will begin in late September when our music arrives from NYC.

3.) Fall Start-up Forms - Please return ASAP!

All students were given a package of forms during their first band class. Please return the Student/Parent Information Sheet, the Uniform Agreement (and 2 cheques) and the signed Cover Page by Friday, September 16th. This helps me to make sure that I have correct contact information for you and your family. Please check with your student if you have not received this yet. Let me know if you would like me to email copies of the forms home to you.

4.) Band Information Night and Band Parents Association Meeting – Tuesday, September 13th, 7pm

This Tuesday I will be hosting an information night for all parents at 7:00pm in my classroom. If you are new to the band program, come learn what it’s all about. Bring your questions! Following that meeting will be the first meeting of the Spectrum Band Parents Association. The Band Parents Association is a TREMENDOUS help in raising funds to support the band program as well as organizing/issuing uniforms, publicity and promotion, and much more. ALL parents are welcome to attend the meetings. They are always looking for new parents to help organize fundraiser and coordinate various events.

5.) Level Ground Coffee Fundraiser

We have just started a new fundraiser - selling Level Ground Coffee! Thank you to Nancy Wong and Allison Hoogland for spearheading this! Information has gone home to all students in the fall packages. We will be filling monthly orders and the first order is due on Thursday, September 15th.

5.) Bottle Drive #1 - Saturday, September 17th, 9am-1pm

Our first bottle drive will be held this Saturday from 9am to 1pm in the school parking lot. Bottle Drives are one of the quickest and easiest way to earn money for your student account (earn money for band trips, lessons, instrument purchases etc.) and for the band general account (to buy school instruments, music, uniforms etc.). We are in need of at least 10-12 parents to drive students to canvass the neighbourhood. We need AS MANY STUDENTS as possible to come out to help support this fundraiser. The Band Parents Association will provided a BBQ hotdog lunch once all sorting is finished. While fundraising is not mandatory, partial help (even and hour or two) is preferred over no help at all. Please remember that the majority of our fundraisers benefit ALL of the band students at Spectrum.

* Parents – If you are able to help with driving, please bring a photocopy of your driver’s license and insurance to the bottle drive. There is a school district form that needs to be filled out before you take students out in your vehicle.

6.) The Band’s GREAT APPLE PIE EVENT! - Year 11

Our big fall FUNraiser has started! Every year band students canvass the neighbourhood and pre-sell our homemade apple pies for $10 each. They are DELICIOUS, are homemade by our band students, and come packaged ready for you to bake and eat OR freeze for a later date. We encourage all students to sell pies to family, friends, neighbours, and teachers. Students will earn money for their individual band accounts and earn money for the band to purchase new instruments and sheet music.

WE ARE IN NEED OF APPLE DONATIONS! Please let me know if you have apples to donate to this fundraiser. We do not have a lot of storage at the school – if you can hold onto your apples until Friday, September 30th that would be really helpful! If not, we will try to figure out a storage solution. If you need students to come and pick your trees, please let me know as well.

Notes:
* We are in need parent coordinators to help make this fundraiser a go. There are detailed instructions to assist with this. Let me know if you are interested!
* Pies are $10 each. Payment must be taken at time of order. Incomplete orders/orders without payment will not be filled.
* Order forms are due on Friday, September 23rd. No late orders will be accepted. Please bring money/order forms in a sealed envelope with your name marked on it.
* More information about pie making day to follow next week.

7.) Oregon Band Tour

With the success of the San Francisco band tour last year, we are pleased to announce that this year’s band tour will be to the Oregon Coast. Information can be found here and was sent home on Friday to Grade 10-12 students. Grade 9s will receive the information package on Monday. We appreciate that the timelines are short for the first month in terms of the trip deposit and first payment. Please let me and my band manager, Jacquie Hawey (spectrumbandparents@hotmail.ca), if you have any questions.

8.) Upcoming: Uniform Sizing For All Students

All students need to be sized for band uniforms at the beginning of the year. Please return your uniform rental agreements and damage deposit/maintenance cheques by Friday, September 16th. Please make note of and attend the following uniform sizing sessions:

**Tuesday, September 20th (6pm-8pm) - Uniform sizing night for all RETURNING students.
**Wednesday, September 21st (6pm-8pm) Uniform sizing night for all NEW/GRADE 9 students.

I think that’s it for now! I am truly excited to be back and working with everyone. As always, please contact me if you have any questions!

Sincerely,

Jamie Davis
