November 30th the 'Band Parent Association' is holding our 3rd Bottle Drive of the year in the school parking lot from 9-1, a hot dog lunch will be provided after. As always, we require 10-12 parents drivers, 6-8 parent sorters and lots of students for canvassing. 30% of funds raised from Bottle Drives benefits all band students thru the purchase of various musical items including music, instruments, uniforms etc. Students receive an hourly credit including parent time, towards their student account that can be used towards Tour payments instrument purchase or rental & music related expenses.
If your interested in the 'Thrifty's Smile Card' program this is an easy way to help earn funds towards the band program. Preload the card and the Band Program receives 5% of the loaded value, this year the money will help off set the cost of Bus Transfers for Music Fest, May 2014. If your interested in using a Smile Card please email and I will forward a card to the school or they will be available at the Christmas Concert, Dec 12th.
We are in the process of planning 2 very exciting Tours. Next May 2014, the students have qualified to attend the '42nd NATIONAL MUSIC FEST CANADA' in Richmond BC. This is an invitation only event, by qualifying thru one of the Affiliated Regional Festivals. More than 10,000 of Canada's finest young musicians will gather in Richmond to perform for recognition as the country's foremost musical ensembles. MusicFest is the ultimate experience in combining music & education and is a moving force in the cultural life of Canada's youth. We have planned an overnight trip to attend this amazing opportunity at the cost of $225 per student. This cost includes meals (except breakfast Day 1), Festival Fees, hotel accommodations, attractions, bus transfers & ferry.
Germany is being planned for March 2015. The cost of this tour is $4000 and includes all costs associated with the trip except spending money. This tour will take us thru Germany's music history, University clinics, WWII history, Berlin Wall, Munich, Leipzig music trail, Neuschwanstein castle, Dachau Concentration Camp, Hitler's Bunker and so much more. This tour is limited to 35 students on a first come basis.
Intent to Travel Forms, deposits & post dated checks for both tours are due by Nov 29th. Please make all checks payable to 'SPECTRUM BAND PARENTS ASSOCIATION.'

Thank you to everyone involved in the Santa Claus Parade! I am so proud of everyone in the marching band. You committed to a busy (and cold) rehearsal schedule, were professional from the time you arrived through to the end of the parade, and really nailed the performance. Thank you for your commitment to band, our school, and our community. We received some really nice compliments back from spectators and from CHEK TV in their coverage of the parade. Bravo, everyone! Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped to get kids ready in the marshalling area. We couldn't have done it without you! :)

It is open to all students in grade 9 through 12 and will have a few rehearsals in the next two weeks to prepare for some brief/informal performances in the community. If you are interested in playing with the Carol Band, please sign up in the band room on the door. In the past, students have used this as an opportunity to learn a secondary instrument. I am pleased to announce the Sharon Nasonov and Jason Gordon will be acting as student conductors for the band this year!
First Rehearsal = TUESDAY AFTER SCHOOL!
5.) Tuba Christmas - Saturday, December 7th - Tuba Christmas is an annual Victoria event that features 50+ tubas and euphoniums playing Christmas Carols in Market Square. Spectrum is always well represented. Sign up on the door in the band room!

4.) Marching Band / Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, November 23.
We had a good start to Marching Band last week! Thank you to everyone that was on time and prepared for practice. We will have 3 final practices this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 7:30am. All three practices will take place OUTSIDE (If the weather turns really ugly we will practice in the gym again). Please dress appropriately as the mornings are chilly! Solid footwear is always a really good idea (change of shoes, gumboots, whatever!)
Please wear your marching band uniform when you are dropped off. For new students this means: Black blazer, black band pants, white dress shirt, orange tie, long black socks and black band shoes. Colour Party members will wear this uniform as well.
I ask that all students decorate their instruments before coming to the parade. Garland, tinsel etc. is really cheap at the Dollar Store or Walmart (some students in the past have gone “all out” with lights and decorations even!).
The parade starts at 5:45pm on Saturday and I hope to see you there!
5.) Hermann’s Jazz Night – Cancelled!
Sorry everyone, but with the busy rehearsal schedule for the marching band I feel that it’s not a good idea to have 50 of our musicians out at this gig. I have cancelled the performance at Hermann’s (originally November 19th) and will look at rescheduling this event. I will let you know!
Thank you to all of my students for an excellent "Back in Action Concert" on Tuesday night! Also, a big thank you to all of the families, friends, staff, grads, and community members that came out to support our students. DVDs will be ready for pick up soon (please bring in order forms ASAP if you wish to order). If you have any pictures or media that we can post on the band website, please don’t hesitate to send along a CD or FlashDrive with your pictures/videos.
It was great to meet so many new parents at our Parent/Teacher Interviews on Thursday night as well. Thank you!
Our Senior Concert Band performed for 4 Remembrance Day observances on Friday at our school AND was also able to perform for the students, staff, and parents at Marigold Elementary School for their assembly (even if we had to sprint back to Spectrum to make it in time for our third performance.. :-) ). Thanks also go to our buglers Jackson Barnard (grade 12) for bugling for “The Last Post” for Spectrum and Marigold and to Jacob Davis (grade 11) for playing for Glanford Middle School. Well done everyone!

4.) Marching Band
We will be starting Marching Band practices this week for all grade 9 –12 students. We only have a short time to prepare for the Island Farms Santa Claus Parade (Saturday, November 23) so attendance at all marching band practices is essential for the success of the band. Students need to have “Holidays on Parade” memorized for the first practice on Thursday morning.
Practices on Thursday and Friday this week will be IN THE GYM. Please wear running shoes or sturdy shoes. We will have 2 practices outdoors next week (I will give you notice about which days these will happen on).
I will announce “Colour Party” positions on Wednesday after-school for girls that are interested in carrying flags in front of the band.
Poinsettia Sales: Orders forms and money are due on Friday, November 15th by 3:00pm in the band room. 100% of the profits from this fundraiser go to individual student accounts. This is a great way to raise money for our trip to MusicFest this spring and for Germany in Spring 2015.
Scrap Metal Drive: Still ongoing! Donations can still be dropped off to Schnitzer Steel at 307 David Street (Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm)
Next Bottle Drive: Saturday, November 30th (9:00am – 1:00pm) in the school parking lot.
We have a really busy week with our first concert and Remembrance Day performances coming up! Please make sure you read carefully as there are some changes to our normal routine this week.
