Congratulations to everyone involved in marching band this fall! The Grey Cup Parade was a huge success and students should feel very proud of themselves for what they accomplished together. There were so many cheers, positive comments, and thank-you’s along the route. The weather was COLD (-4) but there were no complaints – THAT’S strength of character, folks! Thank you to all of the parent chaperones that came along on the trip (supervising, loading, braiding hair, uniform checks, scarf tying… The whole 9 yarsds!). We couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks again to all of you. I am so proud of our band and our school! 1.) Band Classes Monday – Grade 9s and 10s are going SKATING with their PE classes! Open to all grade 9-12 students) Wednesday – Sr. Concert Band at 7:30am, Sr. Jazz Band at Lunch, Pit Orchestra at 3:15pm Thursday – Jr. Jazz Band at 7:30am, Sr. Jazz Band at Lunch, Pit Orchestra at 3:15pm Friday – Jr. Concert Band at 7:30am, Extra help available at lunch and after school! 3.) Upcoming Performances Tuesday, December 9th – Spectrum Band Winter Concert – All bands will be performing at 7:00pm in the Old Gym. Admission is by donation of hamper items (to go to Spectrum families in need). More details to follow. Saturday, December 13th – Victoria Tuba Christmas – Come here the Spectrum tubas and euphoniums perform Christmas carols at 1:00pm in Market Square (with 50-70 tubas!) Just a couple of reminders for the big day tomorrow… Reminders: - Wear your marching band uniform to school tomorrow (Uniform consists of: black blazer, black pants, long black socks, band shoes, white dress shirt, orange tie.) - DRESS WARM and LAYER underneath your uniform: long underwear, Under Armour, etc. It will be cold! - The Band will provide each student with a Spectrum scarf and a pair of gloves (must be returned at the end!) - Don’t forget to pack a LUNCH and SNACKS or bring some food money. - You may want to bring a change of clothes to change on the ferry afterwards (uniforms MUST be hung up/stored neatly, however). - If you are bringing a backpack it will be stored on the bus during the parade. There is no storage at the parade site. - GIRLS hair must be French braided (2 french braids down the back). If you are unable to French braid at home, please come with clean/brushed hair and the band moms will French braid for you. - Check out TSN on Saturday night for highlights from the parade. We will have lots of photos and videos posted on the website after the parade too! Timings: 5:15am – Call time for all students at Spectrum. Wear your marching band uniform and meet in the Band Room. DO NOT BE LATE. 5:45am – Busses depart for BC Ferries 7:00am – Ferry crossing to Vancouver 10:00am – Parade Starts! 3:00pm – Ferry crossing back to Victoria. 5:00pm-5:30pm (approx) - Arrive back at Spectrum. Parents please meet us to pick up your kids. :) ***In the case of any travel/ferry changes parents will be notified via email, the Spectrum Band Website, and the "Spectrum Community School Band" Facebook page. ***In case of emergency while we are away, please contact our parent contacts: Steve Davis 250-744-3312 /250-507-0389 & Russ Forster 250-744-2062 / 250-217-4486. With nearly 100 students traveling on Saturday, please remember that flexibility and professionalism are ESSENTIAL to a quality travel experience. Thanks to everyone that came out to the Band Parents Association meeting on Wednesday night. Your support is truly appreciated! We had a good turn out at the Bottle Drive on Saturday as well. Congratulations to all of those who came out – just over $1200 in profits! 1.) Upcoming Performances: UVic Orchestra Combined Concert / Grey Cup Parade Tuesday, November 25th - Combined Concert for Sr. Concert Band and UVic Symphony Orchestra (7:00pm in the Old Gym, FREE Admission for all) - We hope to have a good turn out for our combined performance with the UVic Symphony on Tuesday night. Bonus marks will be given to Grade 9 and 10 students that attend this performance! UVic will be performing some standard orchestral repertoire and are very excited to be collaborating with us. Don’t miss it! 3:15pm – Setup in Old Gymnasium (Loading Crew needed!) 6:15pm – Call Time for all Sr. Concert Band students (Come to the Theatre in full uniform) 6:30pm – Group Warm/Up and Tuning 6:50pm – Move To Gym (Professional Entrance) 7:00pm – Concert Starts (Sr. Band plays: Lexington, Schindler’s List, Quest of The Undaunted Knight. Thanks for another great week last week! The Senior Concert Band performed at four Remembrance Day observances at the school. Students were prompt, organized, and played very well! Thank you to Andrew Montgomery (for his jaw-dropping performance of the Theme from Schindler’s List and accompanied by the band), Jacob Davis (bugling The Last Post and Reveille) and to Alyssa Zicari (for bugling for Glanford Middle School). Well done everyone. Our focus is now shifting to preparing for our Winter Concert and for our Grey Cup parade. Please make sure you attend rehearsals/classes and practice! 1.) Upcoming Performances: Hermann’s Jazz Night / UVic Orchestra Combined Concert Tuesday, November 18th - Hermann’s Jazz Night – CANCELLED. SORRY FOR THE SHORT NOTICE! Tuesday, November 25th - Combined Concert with UVic Symphony Orchestra (7:00pm) – This concert WILL go ahead. UVic has confirmed that they are still VERY interested in presenting a concert with us on November 25th. This will involve our Senior Concert Band performing with the university group (separate programs). More details to follow. (Optional Performance) Naden Band / UVic Wind Symphony Concert – Friday, November 21st The Naden Band of the Pacific and The University of Victoria Wind Symphony are presenting a joint concert on Friday, November 21st at the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium (8:00pm-10:00pm). The University of Victoria Wind Symphony is recognized as one of Canada’s finest university ensembles and the Naden Band of the Pacific is recognized as one of Canada’s finest military ensembles. Both ensembles will perform separately and then combined as one ensemble. This collaboration is unique in Canada and we want to share this special evening with young musicians on Vancouver Island. Student/Chaperone Tickets are $5 each! If you are interested in attending this concert please let me know by Wednesday this week. Rides can be arranged for students needing rides to UVic Updates from the Band Parents Association… BAND PARENT MEETING The next Band Parent meeting is Wednesday, November 19th @ 7:00pm in the Library. Please join us as we discuss upcoming events for the year and we are still looking to fill a few positions. The positions of President, Vice President, Band Manager, Communication still need to be filled, if you have any questions please join us to discuss what is involved and consider sharing a position with another parent. BOTTLE DRIVE Saturday, November 22nd is our 3rd Bottle Drive of the year, it will be held in the school parking lot from 9-1 and a Hot Dog lunch will follow. We are looking for 12-15 parent drivers, 6-8 parents for sorting & lots of kids for canvassing. WE ARE IN NEED OF A PARENT WITH A TRUCK TO PICK UP BOTTLE DRIVE SUPPLIES FROM THE GLANFORD BOTTLE DEPOT BY 6:00PM, FRIDAY, NOV 21ST & DELIVER TO THE SCHOOL FOR SET-UP ABOUT 8:45AM on Saturday. Just a reminder, if you haven’t already done so, to complete a drivers form if you plan on driving, I have attached the form to complete. Please also check the schools website regarding volunteer driving at https://spectrum.sd61.bc.ca/parent-info/volunteer-drivers/ We have 2 Bottle Drives remaining that are included towards the 1st place prize of $3500 thru Glanford Bottle Depot & Encorp! I hope this finds you doing well! I hope you are looking forward to our concert on Tuesday night. There will be something musical for everyone to enjoy: movie music, medieval knights, romance, novelty pieces, jazz band standards, Bach and rock. I hope to see you all there! 1.) Band Concert - Tuesday, November 4th at 7:00pm Please join us for our annual “Back In Action” Band Concert on November 4th at 7:00pm in the Old Gym (attendance is MANDATORY for all band students). A set-up crew of volunteers is needed to set-up the gym at 3:00pm. Student call time is 6:00pm (wearing the first uniform that you will be performing in first). All students are required to assist with tear-down after the concert. Admission is by donation and students are free! 2.)
