![]() Hi Everyone! THANK YOU for an amazing day on Saturday! To all of our students, band parents, band alumni, parent alumni, family, and friends – a most heartfelt thank you for making our 8th Annual Great Apple Pie Event a massive success. I can't believe we made 1100+ pies in that amount of time! It was also great to see so many students (across all four grades) working together towards completing this goal. I enjoyed getting the chance to meet so many new parents and catch up with returning parents. :) I am really proud of what was accomplished this weekend. Thank you, again. Doug Butler has uploaded some of his photos to his website. Have a look: http://photography.doug-butler.com/p1038961355 If you have pictures of the event, I would love a copy on a CD or Flashdrive for our bulletin boards, display cases and archives. ***Please note that there is NO Bottle Drive on October 13th – as mentioned on the "Dates to Note" sheet. 1.) San Fransisco Band Tour/"The Nationals" - Unfortunately, due to insufficient numbers, we have decided to cancel the band tour to California. HOWEVER, we ARE planning a smaller scale trip to the MusicFest National Festival that is held in Richmond in May 2014. Both our junior and senior concert bands received invitations to perform at "the Nationals" after receiving GOLD (SUPERIOR-PLUS) ratings at the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival in April. We are currently working on an itinerary and travel plan that will be affordable for all families (we also have some very profitable individual fundraisers coming up soon). We also hope to have information for the Germany 2015 Band Tour soon. More information to follow. 7.) Scrap Metal Fundraiser - Our next large-scale fundraiser is our Scrap Metal recycling fundraiser which is running NOW until Saturday, October 26th. This is a fundraiser for the band program general account that will help pay for festival entrance fees as well as raise funds for much needed instruments, music, supplies, and uniforms. To help us achieve our fundraising goals we are asking for your support through the donation of any amount of scrap metal. Scrap metal materials can be dropped off now till October 25th at ‘Schnitzer Steel’ (307 David St, Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm). Advise the yard attendant your metal is being donated to ‘SPECTRUM SCHOOL BAND/SCRAP DRIVE’. The band will also be collecting metal donations at the school, 957 Burnside Rd, Saturday, October 26 from 9:00am-2:00pm. ***Check out our business donation letter (if you know of a business that would be interested in donating scrap metal) and our flyer advertising this event. Please feel free to distribute these as you see fit.*** More information is also available on the band website: http://spectrumbandvictoria.weebly.com/scrap-metal-recycling-2013.html Thanks, everyone! Uniform Sewing Night Thank you to everyone that attended a uniform sizing night last weekend. The band parents will be holding a sewing night on Wednesday night this week in the Band Room from 6-8pm (lots of hemming, organizing, and maintenance things to do to keep our bands looking awesome). They are looking for volunteers to come out and help as it's a big job. New sewing experience is necessary as there are a lot of non-sewing jobs to do too. Please contact Lynda Charchuk and Jen Lindsay if you are able to help. 4.) The Great Apple Pie Event Pie orders have been extended to Monday September 24th!! :) Please turn in all forms and money by Monday at lunch. Incomplete or late orders cannot be filled. Apple Donations – apple donations can be brought to the band room anytime on Friday this week. If you have to bring them earlier please let me know. Apple Pickers – We have had a number of community houses and orchards donate apples but they require people to come and pick. We are currently looking for parent volunteers with vehicles to help drive students to these locations. Please email Sue Pyke if you are able to help with this. Some students have indicated that they are interested in picking apples – I will be checking with their teachers this week to make sure this is okay. Friday – Parent volunteers are needed from 4pm – 8pm to help with set-up in the kitchen / cafeteria. Saturday – The big day! We start at 9am in the school's cafeteria and go until the last pie is made. We need lots of help!! Students should be signing up themselves and any parents that are coming in the band room – this helps us to know how much lunch to make. Parents, you are welcome to bring your own peelers, knives, boards, etc but please make sure that they are clearly labeled. Pies will be ready for pick-up starting at noon.
