Thank you to everyone for a great week. This is always an exciting time as our performing bands "turn the corner" in terms of playing. Great work, team! As I write this, we have over 75 students and parents working hard at our first bottle drive of the year! Thank you for supporting the Band Parents Association's fundraising initiatives. In other exciting news, a group of approximately 30 Spectrum graduates have shown interest in forming an Alumni Band and we look forward to seeing what shape that group will take. More information will be available soon. Four grade 12 students leave this week for an exciting opportunity performing with the British Columbia Honour Bands/Choirs/Strings – congratulations to Matthew Montgomery and Megan Greenwood who are singing in the Honour Concert Choir, Stephanie Butler who is playing clarinet in the Honour Concert Band, and Eirika Lavergne who is playing violin in the Honour String Orchestra! They will be working with some of BC's top high-school music students and top conductors/musicians/educators from Canada and the USA! Way to go!

2.) Requirements Deadline Approaching
For those of you that are new to the band, "Requirements" are the assignments that students are given each term. These are playing assignments that consist of memorized scale patterns, etudes/studies from method books, jazz phrases, and jazz improvisation – these build upon concepts taught in the bands and classes and are designed to further students' musical abilities. We work on these exercises almost every day in class and they are worth 20% for Band 9 & 10 class marks, 25% for Band 11/12 class marks, and 20% for jazz band .
Students must complete their Term 1 Requirements by Friday, October 26th. Parents can visit the Requirements Page on the band website to download the Requirement sheets for this term to see what kids need to do.
Students can complete Requirements in the following ways:
A.) Do them in band classes in front of your peers (This is not meant to be scary. Everyone is supportive of your efforts!).
B.) See me in private when I'm not teaching.
C.) Record your requirements on a digital camera/cellphone and show them to me OR burn your videos/sound files to a CD, DVD, or USB Flash drive and bring them in (Students that record to a tape or 8-track will be asked to go back to the 1980s ;-) … Just kidding, but seriously…)
D.) Upload your Requirements to the Band Website (1 requirement per upload, 20mb max. per file, follow instructions on the page, really easy to do!)
3.) Senior Concert Band Workshop with Dr. Gerald King on October 22
On Monday, October 22nd (10:00am – 12:00pm), Senior Concert Band members will have a workshop with Dr. Gerald King, director of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony. Dr. King is considered one of Canada's most respected conductor's and educators. Grade 9 and 10 students that are in the Sr. Band will be excused from their Period 2 class to join the rest of the band. The class will be extended to run over lunch to maximize on our clinic experience. It's going to be a fantastic learning opportunity for all of us!
