Hi Band Families,
Thank you for a wonderful week. We saw LOTS of success this past week with the band festival, and recently with the Layritz Little League performance!
It was a wet day at Layritz but the Senior Band performed very well. Thank you to all of the parents and students that helped with transporting equipment, set-up, and tear-down! There were many comments from spectators, volunteers and kids about how much the band added to the opening ceremonies. Hopefully everyone has dried out and instruments and music aren’t too waterlogged! Visit our Facebook page to see photos (the website will be updated soon with photos as well).
Congratulations also go out to two Grade 12 students! Kathryn Brown (flute) and Alyshia Joinson (clarinet) who both auditioned for post-secondary music schools last week!

3.) BCMEA Honour Ensembles
Students looking for an extra musical challenge should consider auditioning for the BC Music Educators Association honour ensembles (Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Vocal Jazz, Strings). If you are selected to be in one of the groups, this is a wonderful opportunity to play/sing with top student musicians from all over BC (as well as top directors from all over the world). Visit the BCMEA for more information about auditioning and see me if you have any questions. Auditions are due THIS FRIDAY and the band room is available after school all week for students wishing to record their audition pieces.

4.) Andrew Montgomery’s Solo Concert – Saturday Night
On Saturday April 18, the Victoria Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert, which I would like to invite you to. Not only will you get to hear the VCO with Yariv Aloni conducting, but also Andrew Montgomery (Grade 10) will be performing the Hoffmeister viola concerto as soloist. Andrew is Kelly's son, an honor student at Spectrum, and a very talented musician! He recent;y won the Louis Sherman Concerto Competition and is performing this piece as part of his prize.
I would love to see a large contingent of Spectrum kids and parents come out to support Andrew at this concert. He deserves it! STUDENTS ARE FREE!
Time/Place: 8:00pm at First Metropolitan United Church (932 Balmoral Road).
5.) HELP NEEDED - Fundraisers This Weekend:
Bottle Drive – Saturday, April 18th from 9:00am – 1:00pm. We need lots of parent drivers and kids out to support our bottle drive this weekend! Even an hour or two help us raise money for sheet music, instruments, festival travel, etc. Sign up in the band room if you’re a student and let firstname.lastname@example.org know if you are a parent driver!
Raffle Ticket Sales – Please sell the 10 raffle tickets that were issued to you! 100% of the profits go towards the band program and there are some really wonderful prizes to be won (as well as some KILLER students prizes). All sold and unsold tickets/money need to be returned by Friday at 2:00pm.
Raffle Ticket BLITZ at WALMART – On Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th we will be selling raffle tickets at the Uptown Walmart. We are looking for students (especially juniors) and parents to sell in 1-hour shifts between 12:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturday and 11:00am and 4:00pm on Sunday. The time commitment is minimal and it’s a great way for students to help support the program. Please email Carol Davis (email@example.com) or I if you can help.
Thanks everyone! I am so proud of all my students for what they do on a daily basis. Thank you as well to all of the parents for getting kids to morning classes and for encouraging home practice. It means a lot and your kids are succeeding!
