Thanks for a great week!
We had a wonderful presentation by the Victoria Jazz Society on Thursday. We were treated to performances by the Leon Nagasaki Trio and trombonist Nick LaRviere. As well, all of these musicians shared personal stories about their journey to becoming professional musicians. Our students were awesome – respectful/responsive, asking/answering questions, showing their love for music, and showing interest in pursuing music as a career. Sweet!
A big congratulations goes out to Grade 11 student, Jason Gordon! Jason competed in the Sidney Concert Band’s first-ever scholarship competition this Satudday. He played a tough program of a Rochut melodic study and 'Variations on Carnival of Venice'… And… HE WON! Jason won a $1000 scholarship to be used for further music study. Thanks for representing our school and district so well. Congratulations, Jason!

Ms. Cable and I are available to hear your requirements anytime we are not teaching on Monday. They can also be submitted to the Band Website, or emailed from your phone (using the Voice memo app for iPhone or the Android equivalent). Please make sure that files are easy to open (no weird file formats, please).
4.) Band Concert on Thursday Night (Jr. Band and Jr. Jazz) - Thursday, April 2nd
The junior bands (concert and jazz) have a concert on Thursday night at 7:00pm in the Old Gym. We will be joined by guests from Glanford Middle School and Colquitz Middle school. Call time for Spectrum students is 6:00pm in full uniform. THE RUNNING ORDER CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE. As always, performances are a graded and mandatory part of students’ marks. Please advise if you have any uniform issues (It would be a good idea to try on pants to make sure they are long enough!).
5.) Port Alberni Festival Trip is a GO! - Thursday, April 9th
Thank you to everyone that turned their forms in for the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival. Stay tuned for more information about our day-trip to Port Alberni.
6.) Senior Concert Band Opens Layritz Little League Season – Saturday, April 11th
The Senior Concert Band will be playing for the opening ceremonies at Layritz Little League on Saturday, April 11th. Please keep the late morning and early afternoon free. More information to follow.
***PARENTS – we are in need of trucks/vans to transport chairs, stands, and equipment from the school to the ball park. Please let me know if you can assist!***
7.) New Orleans Jazz Night Fundraiser – Friday, April 24
Our annual “A Touch of New Orleans” Jazz and Dessert night is coming up on April 24th (7:00pm in the Old Gym). This is a full program fundraiser (mandatory) and an awesome opportunity to showcase our jazz band students. We also partner with the Culinary Arts program and Chef Humeniuk and her students produce decadent desserts - all for the great price of $10! The Junior and Senior Jazz Bands will perform throughout the night. Non-jazz band students will sign-up for shifts and participate by doing set-up and tear–down, waiting tables/serving.
***Raffle Tickets – Each student will be given one book of 10 raffle tickets to sell ($2 each). Enter to win some wonderful prize packages! All profits from raffle sales will go towards purchasing instruments, sheet music, and much-needed equipment. Please ask your student to bring these home and encourage them to sell their tickets. Every little bit helps! For every book of tickets that is sold and returned, students will be entered to win one of our student prizes (music lessons, gift cards, tech, lots of good stuff!)
***Raffle Ticket Sales at Walmart/Uptown – We will be out in the community selling raffle tickets to shoppers at Walmart/Uptown on April 18th and 19th. We are looking for students and parents to sell in short one hour shifts: Saturday, April 18th – 12pm to 4pm, and Sunday April 19th 11am to 5pm. Please let me know if you are interested in a shift or sign up in the band room. Students who sell at Walmart will receive an additional entry into the student prize draw!
Thank you to Jen Lindsay for setting up our gaming license and to all of the parents who have been canvassing for prizes for the event! We hope to see you all out on April 24th!
… told you we’re getting busy. ;)
That’s it for now!
