Thanks to everyone who came out to our Bottle Drive on Saturday – we made $1187 that will be put towards student accounts and towards offsetting the festival fees for the Spring band tour to the Nationals. Thank you to all the parents that came out to drive and help with sorting on such a wet day!
A big thank you to everyone who ordered Poinsettias this year! Thank you to Carol Davis, Tamara Zicari, Lynda Charchuk and Melody Olsen for organizing the distribution of the plants (that look wonderful!) this year. :)
Re: MusicFest (The Nationals) - At this time we have 61 out of 80 students needed to make our festival performance trip possible. :( In particular we are missing a number of grade 9 students that make up the junior concert band (only 11 out of 34 grade 9 students have turned in forms). It would be really disappointing to not include the junior concert band at this point – especially as the current grade 10 students (grade 9s last year) put so much work into qualifying for the Nationals at the Port Alberni Band Festival in the spring.
At this point I am asking for students (in all grades) and their families that have not turned in forms to PLEASE reconsider. It is heartbreaking to think that we may not be able to participate in this event as the Nationals RARELY move from their home in Toronto to the West Coast. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our current Spectrum students and going to the Nationals is a first in the history of Spectrum Community School. No other high school concert bands in the Greater Victoria School District have received an invitation to this festival recently. Please consider this.
The Festival runs from May 12 – 17, 2014 – I am unable to register with MusicFest and confirm dates until I have a commitment from students and their families. Furthermore, booking a MusicFest hotel cannot be done until we are registered in the festival. As I’m sure you can understand, time is of the essence at the moment.
